The Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB) regularly organizes the seminar series ‘Sthapattya O Darpone Sthopoti’ to create a platform for sharing architectural ideas, design philosophies, and professional experiences. The fourth session was held on 17 October 2026 at the IAB Multipurpose Hall. The featured speaker was renowned architect and educator A. B. M. Mahbubul Malik Prince, who currently serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture at Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST). He has long-standing experience in both architectural education and professional practice in Bangladesh. Architect Prince graduated in Architecture from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 1984. He received the “Ahsanur Rahman Gold Medal” by unanimous decision of the jury. During the seminar, he shared experiences from his professional and teaching careers, his personal approach to understanding architecture, and the ideas and philosophies behind his designs. |
In the early years of his career, Architect Prince worked on several projects with Architect Kazi Anisuddin Iqbal, Principal Architect of Nirnoy Upadeshta Ltd. Notable projects from this period include Square Centre in Mohakhali and the design competition for the 400-bed Khan Jahan Ali Hall at Khulna University, which he won in collaboration with Nirnoy Upadeshta Ltd. The hall was later constructed. Its design focused on creating suitable spaces for student accommodation and activities, encouraging natural ventilation, and ensuring connections between different floors. |
Drawing on these projects, he explained how functional needs, environmental considerations, and a distinct architectural expression can come together to shape a unique design. He also discussed his experience in designing residential and duplex houses, including a residential building on Haji Mohsin Road in Khulna. His work with KS Consultant in Dhaka provided another perspective on architectural design. He discussed using Neoclassical architectural elements alongside modern design features in various projects. The application of Classical architectural principles in the design of Oxford International School in Dhanmondi was another important topic. Referring to an industrial project for Mahin Group, he also explained how local materials such as brick, combined with Neoclassical design elements, can give an industrial building a distinct architectural character and visual identity. |

Fellow Architect Professor Ali Naqi joined the seminar as moderator. He shared his reflections on the speaker’s presentation and discussed different aspects of their professional and teaching experiences. According to Architect Prince, architecture is more than a profession; it is an expression of thought, feeling, and creativity. He encouraged young architects to learn from the works of international architects, develop their own design language, and continue striving for quality work despite professional limitations. He emphasized that teaching students how to design is not enough. It is equally important to help them enjoy the design process, appreciate architecture, and develop a curiosity for creative exploration. |
Through this initiative, IAB continues to create opportunities for students and young architects to learn from experienced professionals and exchange ideas. By exploring not only the practical aspects of architecture but also its underlying thoughts, philosophies, and creative possibilities, the seminar encouraged participants to look at architecture from new perspectives and approach their own work with greater thought and care. |
